What is YARD MANAGEMENT

Yard management is the process by which your company directs inbound and outbound cars, trucks, workers, cargoes, pallets, and anything else that moves through the yard to your ports. Effective yard management is essential for maintaining the correct mix of inbound and outgoing freight. Basically, yard management is a collection of tasks aimed at ensuring the smooth movement of inbound and departing freight.

This includes:

  • Coordinating truck movement in a yard
  • Warehouse or fulfilment/ distribution centre (DC)
  • Scheduling and performing loading and unloading activities at the ports
  • Asset tracking and transferring

HOW DOES YARD MANAGEMENT IN GENEX LOGISTICS WORK

  • Contact the carrier to schedule and confirm the appointment. This is where vehicle information is collected for verification.
  • Once the truck arrives, the driver checks in at the gate, the trucks are subjected to a security check or other type of verification and is then directed to the parking area where the trailer is unloaded.
  • When the truck arrives, the guard informs the management and/or the dock personnel.
  • Once the dock is ready, the spotter receives orders to retrieve the trailer and transfer it to the dock entrance. The cargo is now being prepped for loading.
  • The trailer is loaded by dock personnel.
  • The driver attaches the loaded trailer to the truck after the spotter pushes it to the parking lot.
  • The vehicle exits through the gate.
